We would love for you to be a podcast subscriber if you were born in metro Atlanta, like me, or maybe you just moved here in the last few years. And I hate to say that like most people who are from Metro Atlanta, I tell people all the time, there are 700 of US natives, people who were born and raised right here in Metro Atlanta.
Certainly, I am making that number up, but it seems like a small group. Atlanta has been welcoming people from all over the United States, in fact, all over the world, to become residents all over the last number of years. You know, a lot of things that have put Atlanta on the map over the last 50 years. I heard a statistic, and this is probably 60 years ago now, that Birmingham, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia, and let's just say this was 60 or 65 years ago, had the exact same.
Population and I find that hard to believe. 'cause Birmingham, Alabama today is between 300 and 400,000 or whatever it is in Atlanta. Uh, depending upon where you're looking is somewhere five and a half million to a little over 6 million depending upon what you're counting as the metro Atlanta counties.
And I ha was lucky enough to have, uh, probably a former chairman, I don't think he was chairman at the time of the Atlanta Regional Commission on the radio show early in the. Years of the show we've been on for 10 years now, so that's been a long time ago. And he said that there were four significant things that put Atlanta on the map.
Number one was Martin Luther King Jr. And the fact that he was from Metro Atlanta. Number two is the Atlanta International Airport, Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. I noticed the other day still the busiest airport in the world for the last 23, 24 years. Uh, 94 million passengers through the airport.
I think it had gotten up to as high as 110 million a year before the pandemic. Don't quote me on that. So number one, M L K, junior. Number two, the airport. Number three, the Olympics. They say that when the Olympics came to Atlanta, Georgia put an international spotlight on Atlanta that had never been present before.
So the Olympics, and I believe the fourth thing. That he said his name was Tadd. Leafhead, I believe. Uh, a member of the Atlanta Regional Commission back then. But the fourth thing was the fact that Atlanta was a transportation hub. If you've ever looked at a heat map where the more traffic that is traveled on a road, uh, you know, uh, buy trucks that are, are carrying inventory, um, at man, most of the products that get moved.
On the Eastern seaboard, uh, many of the products that get moved on the eastern seaboard come through Metro Atlanta. But if you, again, relocated to Atlanta for a job or to get close to family, you know, we have a few interesting bits of information, uh, from this past year from some rankings and some, some data and research and surveys that were done might even make you even prouder to live in metro Atlanta.
So Atlanta was named as the best city. Now this is by Atlanta. This is an article from Atlanta Magazine. The study was a study done by Wallet Hub, but members of the class, the graduating class of 2023, I. The article says, could improve their chances of landing a successful career where they move from wherever they are today to Atlanta, Georgia.
And again, this is according to a new wallet hub study, which named the city the best place to start a career. I think that's pretty cool. Personal. The personal finance website looked at 182 US cities based on two major dimensions. Number one, professional opportunities, and number two, quality of life.
Those professional opportunities included the availability of entry level jobs, the monthly average, starting salaries, the annual job growth rate, the unemployment rate, workforce diversity, which is so important to the younger generation, and job satisfaction, quality of life. Metrics included median annual income, commuter friendly jobs.
Families in singles, friendliness and projected population growth. Atlanta, which ranked second for professional opportunities in seventh for quality of life, was the overall number one ranked city, the rankings of the top 10 in the United States, number one at Atlanta. Number two, Orlando, Florida, number three, salt Lake City, Utah, which is a place I spend a pretty good bit of time.
I do some consulting there. Number four is Columbia, South Carolina. I lived in Columbia, South Carolina for four and a half years in the early nineties. Tampa, Florida is number five. Charleston, South Carolina. A city I love is number six, Miami, Florida is number seven, followed by Austin, Texas at eight.
Minneapolis, Minnesota at nine and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 10. Uh, Minneapolis and Penn. Pittsburgh are both beautiful cities. Minneapolis is just too flipping cold for me in the wintertime. First time I traveled to Minneapolis, I'm noticing all of these above ground tunnels, uh, that connect buildings, and I'm like, oh my gosh, I wonder why you have.
To have those. And when I went back in February, I realized why you have to have those. Because if you walked outside to go from one building to another one, you could very well, um, freeze to death or stop breathing. Pittsburgh is an amazing city, is so beautiful. All the buildings downtown are glass, but my favorite city in the list is Atlanta, Georgia, again ranked the number one place, the best city for starting a career.
So if you're listening, trying to decide where you're gonna live, come on to. Metro Atlanta, we've got another impressive ranking, and this is from Money Magazine. For more than 35 years, money Magazine has been listing the best places to live in the us and in 2022, Atlanta was ranked number one in the annual ranking.
Money examines economic opportunities, quality of life, diversity. And where the best future lies. Atlanta took the top spot because it is a city where anyone can feel like they belong. And I don't know how you feel about that, but I'm proud of that. I like the fact that we've grown an inclusive city, and to be honest with you, I've got so many friends from different backgrounds and cultures and it makes my life so much richer to experience things through the eyes of other people.
It's fascinating for me. Money Magazine outlined the city's best attributes, which it says are number one, ample green space. And if you don't believe that, just fly into metro Atlanta on an airplane and you will see trees upon trees upon trees, upon trees. Also, its historical re relevance. It is a relevant city, historically, mostly, uh, because of, um, Equal rights mostly because of, um, the fact that that many famous people from Metro Atlanta fought for the interest of minorities who might not have been as well served as they should have been.
Third thing is a feud, food and music scene with global influences. I love that. Plenty of bike and walking trails. I'd love to start biking myself an amazing airport. Four professional sports teams. I don't know about you, but I tend to be kind of a fair weather fan. As soon as we get toward the end of the season, I need to, uh, start backing my team and being involved and, uh, all of us, especially those who are from Metro Atlanta, we need to support those teams big time.
And there are numerous post-secondary institutions, so lots of ways for people who. Want to be best educated for them to continue their educational journey. There's also 21 farmer's markets across the city. These are active currently. Uh, basically the food availability, uh, was another pro for Atlanta, especially all different types of food.
It is the fourth largest black majority city in the us. It's the proud home, as we've talked about, of Martin Luther King, Jr. And then the exploding job market, the article says is another win for the city. The UN unemployment rate sits significantly below the national average. Uh, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth has been outpacing NA National Averages for more than the last year.
The growth, the article says is primarily driven by the region startup ecosystem, which is being fueled by a tech. Uh, incubator system and venture capital firms. So there is a lot of help for new startup technologies in metro Atlanta. Atlanta has become a tech hub, and if you don't believe that, look in Midtown, look in the perimeter center area and look up the 400 corridor.
One big tech company after another, after another, uh, either has headquarters or a regional office in the area. The 11 counties. Now listen to this. Not everybody's gonna like this. The 11 counties that make up the city's commutable area are expected to gain two and a half million people by 2040. So that means 17 years from now, we will have 8 million people.
Growth naturally comes with growing pains, and Atlanta is no. Exception to that, the wave of incoming residents is driving up prices of housing and pushing thousands of residents. To the Atlanta's outskirts also, and this is Cleve. Adding this does not help when it comes to traffic. The city is facing a balancing act between an economic boom caused by new tech talent and staying true to its roots.
I would imagine that the city of Atlanta will be able to figure out how to do both of those things together. So kudos to Metro Atlanta.
